background
Jim Evans started Evans Custom Amplifiers in 1962 as a way to provide clean and clear sound for his pedal steel guitar. Scot and Julia Buffington now run the company, following in the footsteps, but also pushing engineering design forward. Scot's "weekend warrior" gig is as 7-string Jazz guitarist and he owns "a few" nice ones!
description|philosophy
Evans amps have a well deserved reputation for their unique EQ tone shaping preamp section and reliability; two key factors for the working musician.
Preamp controls labeled "Depth" "Body" "Expand" and "Buff" are uncommon but they allow for significant maleability in voicing the amplifier to any Jazz guitar or tuning to the acoustics of a room....provided that it's clean!
The 200 watt digital power section introduced in 2005 makes for an extremely quiet amplifier that is also light weight.
product line
Evans manufacturers two variations of their electronics packaged in 4 configurations.
The Evans solid state models are FET designs that emulate even-order overtone characteristics of tubes. They voice with a solid bottom end, punchy mids and accurate top end.
The Evans Hybrid series couples two low-gain AT7 tubes in the preamp section resulting in a softening of the high and low end frequencies.
Either electronic variant can be packaged as an integrated head amp or as a combo in RE200 1x10, JE200 1x12, or SE200 1x15 configuration. Combos are semi-open back cabinet design. The heaviest model weighs about 35 lbs.
warranty
1-year parts and labor.
client opinions
The EQ controls on an Evans amp are different than the industry norm. There are more knobs and switches. There is no "center" or "flat" position. They're interactive. Jazz guitarists who appreciate the particulars of the EQ section will be drawn to the tonal flexibility of the Evans line. 200 watts RMS means that they have plenty enough power to deliver.
